Understanding the Sanction Process

Students who fail to meet academic standards are subject to sanctions. The Admissions and Academic Standards Committee convenes at the conclusion of every semester to consider academic sanctions for students.Sanctions may include academic warning, probation, suspension and dismissal from the University. All decisions are made according to the University's Reasonable Progress Policy; however, the committee reserves the right to apply any sanction if warranted.

Types of Sanctions

Academic Warning

Students whose GPA for any one semester falls below 2.00 or students whose cumulative GPA falls below 2.00, but above probation guidelines in the first semester will be placed on academic warning by the Admissions and Academic Standards Committee. Academic probation guidelines apply once a student completes 12 or more hours.

Academic Probation

Students whose GPA after 12 credit hours at Urbana University falls below the following standards will be placed on Academic Probation for a period of one academic term. Academic probation places a student on notice that satisfactory academic progress has not occurred and that the student is in jeopardy of being suspended if progress is not apparent. If a student is placed on academic probation, the student may be ineligible to participate in recognized student activities, including intercollegiate athletics or club sports.

Credit Hours Attempted  GPA
12-23 1.50
24 -47 1.80
48 -59 1.90
60 and above 2.00

Continued Academic Probation

Students on academic probation may be continued on probation if they are making progress toward reasonable academic standards. Failure to show improvement in the GPA will result in dismissal for academic performance.
